Mother Nest: This nest is always located in ground near structure. Carpenter ant queen start this nest in fall. This nest is located 3 ½ feet to 4 feet deep in the ground (below freezing line). These nests are moisture sensitive and have ants nest in it.
Carpenter ants eggs cannot survive without water, so mother nest will always be in the ground around your house or structure.
Shuttle Nests:
When the population of carpenter ants increases, carpenter ants start forging inside the structure. Worker ants chew through lumber, wood pillars and wooden structure in the walls, make galleries to feed the larva. They transfer larva from mother nest to shuttle nest and then these larva grow to adult and future carpenter ants.
As carpenter ants make galleries in wood, the structure become significantly week and damage.
